The Mary Jane, rebuilt as a sneaker

A flat, flexible gum sole and one hook-and-loop strap across the instep do the work. The sole keeps you low to the ground and bends with your step; the strap sets the fit in a second and keeps the shoe where it should be.

It's a hook-and-loop strap across the instep. Pull it tighter or looser and press it down. You can adjust it during the day without taking the shoe off.

How do I clean them?

Wipe the upper with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, and brush the sole. Don't put them in the washing machine or the dryer.
